About Us

Who are we?

Simply, the Be A Mikey Project is a philanthropy and faith based 501(C) 3, non-profit organization dedicated to raising money, material aid and awareness of our adopted children and Christian organizations. Specifically, the people and children of Pomfret and Tosca South Africa, and the Emmanuel Christian Organization outreach projects in Angola.

The Be A Mikey Project is the brainchild of Alexandra Willis. She found inspiration for this idea while traveling on safari to the Kalahari Desert in South Africa with her family. She was touched in a deeply personal way after seeing the gated community of Pomfret and the children kept behind those walls due primarily to politics. Alexandra created this project to help the children obtain some of God’s blessings that she enjoys herself.

These children of Pomfret are orphans of war and poverty. They are the sons and daughters of a proud people, the families of the 32 Battalion, and Angolan Portuguese unit of the South African Army. Now forced to live behind a gate. They have very little and meat only when donated. They speak only Portuguese and a little broken English. They reside in broken houses but are now helped by generous people like you, and given a moral foundation of Christian teaching.

The Children of Tosca South Africa and their parents reside in a Squatters village. They have communal outhouses, only centralized community water supply, and live in tin and cardboard shanties. They are struggling new Christian people who worship Jesus Christ in a dirt floored, tin roofed shed, with an oil drum as a pulpit. They enjoy candy and soccer like all children, but even shoes are hard to come by.

The ECO, and Be A Mikey Project also serve the Children of Ekamba Angola. They are also the victims of poverty, poor transportation and war. They live in similar if not more primitive circumstances, as do the Tosca people. Here, Christian teachings and the building of Churches, moral education and nutritional support are paramount.

It was Juan Van Tonder, director of ECO that reminded us of God’s Promise: “ He that hath pitty upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord, and that which he has given will He pay again”. Proverbs 19:17

Paying our blessings forward is our goal.

Who is a Mikey?

You are a Mikey . As a donor and supporter of the Be A Mikey Project, you are a friend to the children and a valuable tool of God. Mikey is the English spelling of the Afrikaans word maatjie, and it translates as ‘friend’. It is the expression that children use to address each other.

How does the Be A Mikey Project help the children?

Several ways:

1). Direct financial assistance: Tax –deductable donations.

2). Indirect financial assistance with sales of items like T-shirts, bracelets etc.

3). Coordination with local safari companies like Frikkie Du Toit Safaris and other relief organizations like SCI, Dallas Safari Club, and Christian organizations for food and material donations.

How much of my donation will reach the children?

Our staff is 100% volunteer, so as close to 100% of all donations and sales profits as possible will be delivered to the needy. The staff will work hard to make sure that the expenses of the organization are as limited as possible.

Donations of merchandise and services will be appreciated!

What has been done already?

With God’s blessings, we are proud to announce the donation of thousands of pounds of animal protein, sports equipment and monetary assistance. Thanks to the Be A Mikey Project, a church will have 100 chairs, and some children are better fed, clothed and are learning the word of God without the pain of hunger.

There is so much more work to do! Give with you heart and God will reward you.
